View Full Version : Greetings from...
flt6fun 08-14-2008, 03:46 PM ...another johnny-come-lately, gas-price-induced, LA-traffic-commuting, purchaser of (come to find out) a reeaally cool bike. I don't have any pictures yet, but its yet another bone-stock, bright-yellow 599.
My story quickly:
39 years old ~ 3 kids ~ lovely wife of 16 years ~ owner of 3 cars (F150, Toyota Sequoia, '74 Porsche 911) ~ past Honda's include an '87 Shadow 1100, '82 Sabre 750, and most recently, a '92 Nighthawk 750.
My last bike (the nighthawk) was sold in 2001, partially due to the arrival of our first child, partially due to needing the $$ to purchase the 911.
Fast-forward to June '08...gas prices exceed $4.25 gallon and my daily commute is 36 miles of lovely Los Angeles gridlock (10 W -> 5 N in a.m., for those of you who know the area); my truck get 12 mpg, the 911 gets 17. Being older, and therefore theoretically wiser ...my thoughts turned to cheap, practical transportation, and I casually begin the search for a bike. Coincidentally, a good friend was just about to unload a meticulously maintained 2004 599 w/1200 miles on the odo. I took it for a ride, and found the answer to my prayers. Always having owned bikes that fell more into the standard/cruiser category, this bike has been a revelation. I find nirvana as I exceed 9000 rpm and hold on for dear life as 13k arrives with an alacrity that redefines addictive.
Since July, I have been perusing the Wrist Twisters forum, but was disappointed with how little info was being discussed specific to the 599 as opposed to the 919. It was just yesterday (August 13th, 2008) that I searched for a more 599 friendly forum, and viola, here we are!
I wish to thank AleX for maintaining this forum, and hope I can offer the smallest pittance of substance in exchange for the fantastic amount of information I have already gleaned from these electronic pages...thanks to all!
SLC599er 08-14-2008, 03:59 PM I'm not sure what half those words mean, but I'm guessing it roughly translates into "My bike rips and I love it!" :D Incidentally, you don't need to use the gas mileage excuse around here--don't worry, we won't tell your wife.
Welcome.

Welcome.
Yeah, sorry about that. I was half-delirious yesterday on cold medication, and got a little carried away. Thank you for the interpretation!
After a week with the 599, I was starting to wonder whether or not I should just go get a 919 for the additional umph on the low end, but then I learned how to ride it and have come to appreciate it's dual personality...I can putter around town as laid back as I want, or when the desire strikes, I can open up the proverbial can of banshee-wail-inducing-whoop-ass! I have since come to have sympathy for the 919 owner, limited to a paltry 9500 rpm redline...
That being said, the 919 will probably be the first bike I add to the stable...I just love the look of these two naked Honda's
(that didn't sound gay, did it? not that there's anything wrong with that...)

You are MOST welcome! Though as you may realize, this fantastic amount of information would not be here without all the wonderful people who contribute to this forum. My thanks extends to them.
Congrats on your purchase and a wonderful family!
djamalt 08-29-2008, 12:32 AM Burbank eh? Have you hit Angeles Crest yet? or the canyons of Malibu? I've only ridden in valley a handful of times. Damn it's hot out there. But I digress... :welcome
mitsurugi 08-29-2008, 08:27 AM Welcome to the forum and glad you found a nice deal on a 599 8)
Although I don't know what a "traffic gridlock" is.... :D
yeroC 08-29-2008, 12:52 PM Welcome to the show. Make yourself at home and post away. Post a pic
or two of that Porsche. Oh and the bike too. 8) And additionally, welcome
to the yellow 599 (best looking color and fastest of them all  ) gang!!
flt6fun 08-29-2008, 01:25 PM I'll start with the 911 ('74 with new 3.0 engine which replaces the original 2.7) since I don't have a good one of the bike yet...

Yeah, I've taken numerous different bikes as well as any car that I've owned that could be considered sporty all over the San Gabriel Mountains...
One of my favorites...Decker Canyon from the 101 over the hill and down to the Pacific Coast Highway; the switchbacks are almost too dramatic for a bike, but in a Honda S2000-AMAZING!
tsweimer 08-29-2008, 02:38 PM I have both the 599 and the 919. Well the 599 is my wife's. It's very very hard to say which bike I prefer. I've written about having both on here before. Some days I'm tempted to list the 919 on craigs and pick up another 599. For now I'll stick to keeping both.

That's where I scrapped a peg. One of my favorite runs in Malibu.
yeroC 08-29-2008, 09:11 PM Beautiful Porsche. I'm jealous! 8) I don't gather it rains much there, eh?
Judging by the lack of windshield wipers. :D
LeatherWings 08-29-2008, 10:19 PM Hey, welcome fellow LA area rider!
yes, that is a nice car... but now let's see some pix of the bike!
JBarx 08-29-2008, 11:24 PM Welcome! Nice work with the vocab. This is actually a pretty bright crew - for the most part - so you shouldn't have any issues tossing around the multi-syllable qualifiers.
I feel your pain with the F-150. With my bike being out of commission, it's kicking me in the nuts. HAD to get the 5.4. Back in '02 it seemed like a reasonable idea.
My last bike (which was my first bike) was a '99 Nighthawk 750 with 8,300 miles which I ran to about 14,000 before I sent it to an early grave. Sort of. Whole 'nother story. Whether it's my fault or a negligent cager, everything I ride seems to be destined for asphalt. I plan on bucking that trend.
But enough of that nonsense... on a brighter note - you'll like it here. Good info and good people.
JWAJack 09-01-2008, 11:19 PM Hey flt6fun -
welcome from another denizen of LA, though I'm quite south of you. The "Tour de Peninsula" is a bit of fun too, both PV Drive East and some other backroads. Views are hard to beat.

are you from the Southern Hemishere? I had to ride downtown last week and as I walked from the Ketchum Y down towards the Library I saw a messenger with a 919. Asked him if he was you (he asked, "why would I post on a 599 site?"), and he said that there were several other 919s downtown but most of the guys were from Brazil. Anyways, don't make it downtown much, especially on the bike (commute is San Pedro to Torrance and back; good excuse to do a PV Drive East turn on the way home), but I'll keep my eyes peeled for you and the other LA folks.

Nope, I'm an Asian dude who's originally from Arizona :P . I will most always be riding my blue 1st generation SV650 while i'm on the job, unless something is up with it.

oh yeah, while we're on the subject... on Friday i had to make a delivery to the US Bank/Library Tower on the 70th floor. I was able to get a quick glance out the window from the office i was in - pretty unbelievable.
just a few pics for those of you unfamiliar with downtown LA:

Ha! Where is that homo anyway? I tried calling him a few times but he won't answer my calls.
I'm going to post his number soon so everyone can start bugging him!
JBarx 09-02-2008, 10:07 AM Dude up and vanished like a fart in the wind. I wonder what happened to him. I haven't had a bike I can ride for a month now and I'm still around.

If Leatherwing's post regarding the US Bank/Library Tower intrigues you, and you want to get an even better view, then come run in the Stair Climb to the Top, a race up all 75 stories/1500 steps of the US Bank/Library Tower; the race occurs on Friday, September 26, from 3-6 for team races, including firefighter teams, swat teams, and corporate teams, and 6-8:30 for individuals. The race finishes on the roof, with even better views than the 70th floor, and all to benefit the community benefit programs put on by the Ketchum Downtown YMCA (which serves some of the poorest neighborhoods in LA, in addition to being a good gym for downtown workers). Last year a one legged librarian, Peggy Murphy, climbed the whole tower and inspired everyone on her way up. If you're interested in participating, go to www.YMCAstairclimb.org; if you want to volunteer, call 213-639-7453. (I'm a member of the Y Board and will be a volunteer on the roof.) Remember, "Elevators are for Wimps"!

...very observant. Any danger of rain, and I install a whoppin' 15" wiper that clears 80% of the windshield. I think I had to install it once last year, and once this year so far... :thumbsup
flt6fun 09-16-2008, 11:54 AM Thought I would finally post a picture of the bike...kinda...well, it's better than nothing.
Just picked it up having had both it's front and rear wheels repaired from pothole damage. My wallet is now $640 lighter...
