guys, i have the D&D carbon muffler and its just a bit too loud for me...sounds like a fart can more than a performance exhaust. Anything out there that is performance oriented but more on the 'tamed' side of things? stock might work ok to, but i would prefer something performance oriented than that. thanks!

It's a slip-on pipe... how much "performance" are you expecting? Just curious. I mean we've got 90hp bikes... if you're expecting 10hp from a pipe then you need to have a talk with a professional.

In most cases - and before anyone attempts to flame me, I said "most" - pipes are for sound purposes and not much more. Maybe a pony or two on a good day.

If you don't like the sound, then by all means, change the pipe. But I wouldn't go seeking a more "performance-oriented" option, because without spending serious cash, there likely isn't one.

There is a mile-long thread on exhausts to check out. A few names to check out are Leo Vince, Akrapovic, and GPR. People here have all kinds of exhausts. Just look around.

thanks for the fast reply. I am a Systems Engineer, so i know that the gains are minimal at best. my point was to not go as restrictive as the stock, but to achieve something more quiet than i have now. gains are not the goal and i completely know that.

i have already read the thread you refered to, i am more worried about availability/options than what i can just go out and buy.

Right... the "good" ones are hard to come by. Akrapovic is almost impossible to get here in the states. GPR is tough, too. Leo Vince is a little easier. Then there's Two Brothers, Blue Flame, FMF, Scorpion, Devil, Hindle, Vance and Hines, Micron, Arrow, Mivv... and those are just the ones I can name off the top of my head.

Don't know what to tell you, man. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder.

Sounds like to me what you are leaning towards is an aftermarket pipe, just not with the db-killer removed. Most of them are louder than stock if they have the db-killer left in, some only barely. Some manufacturers (Hindle for one) call this db-killer the "stealth" option.

Based on their reputation, the D&D pipe is on the loud side, regardless.

I have a can from Fuel UK that has a DB killer you can install that makes it 80db which is pretty much stock. With the killer out it is not to loud. Still gets comments every time I take it in for service. I have always been interested in the D&D so if you want to drop me a line we can see what's up.

i have a mivv small oval on my 2004 599. my ears ring after even 5 mile rides. i hate wearing earplugs.

just posted this for anyone wanting a quieter aftermarket option.

i'm considering trying to put a discreet exhaust tip on the end as long as it doesnt look too stupid, or I might sell it.
