View Full Version : After three seasons it finally happened to me...

This past wednesday was my turn. Ran over a piece of tire on the roadway, bike started tankslapping out of control and eventually went down.

I was doing about 60-70, the bike slid for quite a while on its right side and I slid as well. I had my jacket on and jeans so I only got a minor scuff on my left elbow and same thing on my right ankle. After looking at the jacket the only reason I got hurt in my elbow was because I must've slid on that same spot for a while and it eventually made a whole in the jacket. I can't imagine what would have happened if I had no jacket on (I rode without it maybe 3 times total in the last 3 years).

Pics are below. What do you guys think? Totalled?
I went to my local dealer's website and the tank, speedometer, radiator, handlebar, rear cowl and clutch cover alone are $2150. My two brother's exhaust also got nice scratch as well so a stock exhaust adds a quick $496 to that previous total.

Personally, I wouldn't mind it being totalled, getting the cash, buying it back from insurance. It would give me a nice project for winter and I would sell it around March/April of next year.

I am not scared of riding again but I think I am done with sportbikes, had it been a nice cruiser, it wouldn't have behaved like that I think.

Thanks in advance for the replies and please wear your gear, the cops didn't even think it was me when they got there since I was standing up and completely fine, they kept asking me where the owner of the bike was.

Honestly, I can't believe that bike went down at freeway speeds, either. I'm glad you are okay; you seem like you got off really lucky!

You had that awesome paint job, too. Breaks my heart.

Get back to 100% soon.

Nooo!!!!!! Not that paint?

As a crash veteran, I feel your pain. Feel better soon... the bike stuff will work itself out.

Totaled? Depends on how you define it honestly. Mine was totaled and it's getting fixed for less than $1000. It was totaled because the engine mount bolt bent and cracked the cast block at the bolt sleeve. Other than that, the damage was minor and mostly cosmetic. Of course the tank and tail were undamaged so that was a big plus... butit also drove my salvage buyback price through the roof.

Your insurance will probably total it, but you should be able to fix it and come out ahead. It looks like the scrapes on the cases are on replaceable pieces. The rest looks like buy and swap. As long as nothing is tweaked out of alignment you should be okay. Of course there is that paint issue. If it IS totaled and you can buy that back for under $1000, I would do it.

Wow, sorry to hear about this!

I vote to buy it back and fix it back up - doesn't look like too bad of damage from the pics - mostly cosmetic I assume.

Anyway, glad you weren't hurt much :)

Glad you are OK. That really sanded down the right side of the engine! If the bike is totalled, buy it back and make it your project bike.

Sucks to hear it, and sucks that it may transition you to a completely different style of bike. At least you're not planning to stop riding, though. Glad to hear your gear did the job it's supposed to.

Scariest moment on my 599 was a gigantic block of styrofoam jumping out from beneath a car in front of me. Had I been at a proper following distance I could have avoided it, but I was tailgating and hit hard. Wicked wobble and I just held on as the front tire literally jumped out several feet to the right side of the lane and went crazy. But it came back in one piece.

All that scraping and that damn swingarm sticker didn't come off!!! Arrghh! Kidding my man. VERY Glad to hear that you are okay.

 You are lucky. The most important thing is that you're unharmed. As for the bike, do what feels right.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Can any of you who knows more about the bike part names than me run a quick check on the price of all parts (www.motorcyclemall.com). This way I can know a little better how much it's going to be to get fixed.

My insurance claim guy called, I gave the description of accident and some of the damage. At first he wanted the bike to go to a dealer where they could provide the insurance company with a quote but than after I mentioned the damage he asked me if i thought it was totalled. I told him just the tank and speedometer are $1500. He said he'll send his appraiser to check it out and we'll take it from there.

Any tips on how to deal with the appraiser would be appreciated.

I know my insurance company does not cover the aftermarket accessories at all based on what they say on their website. Are they obligated to cover them?

Thanks to all.

It is hard to believe aftermarket parts are not covered, but I think that depends on the terms of your policy. Does it list any exclusions? By the way I'm not a lawyer.

My policy covers aftermarket parts (State Farm).

Ahhh I hate to see such a fine white bike all messed up. Yeah it's totaled.

And it was all because of that swing arm sticker

Did the bike turn white from fear? :P

There is a guy on this forum that wrecked the front end but everything else is good. He lives in Delaware County PA. His bike is totaled. Either buy his bike or sell him yours, after you get your settlement.
