Hello all, I just bought my 2006 599 today. I have been lurking here for a while, and finally decided to go with the 599 over the SV650. Price was the only factor keeping me from the 599, and I finally found a good deal. BTW SVrider.com has an excellent forum as well, with much more traffic(due to the fact the SV was still available new this year, no doubt).

Anyway, I didn't get the manual with the bike(paperwork at their other dealership, so will be sent to me), so I have a newbie question. After I trailered my bike home, It started immediatley. Thus I assumed that the choke was on. When I tried to turn the choke off, the bike started to die. Is the choke off in the up position? It was only in the mid 80's here when I started it. It was about an hour and a half after it had been run- and then trailered at 60 miles an hour since then, so I'm thinking it was cold. Choke lever was all the way up. started, ran, and rode with the choke lever in the up position. Yes, I am OCD, and the answer to this question is probably simple, but I'm still high from the purchase, and would appreciate some assurance.... because if the choke is on and it won't run with it off, it seems like a major problem to me. One I could alleviate by canceling a check. :|

Thanks guys, this site is an excellent source of information for me, and I hope it stays that way far into the future.

Ben

P.S. Idle with the choke lever UP was about 1100, so I am going to try to adjust that up that to spec.. thanks to those who previously posted on that topic as well.

Ok, so I just started it again, definately cold this time. started right up with choke lever up, ran about 1100 idle, pushed choke lever all the way down, runs about 1900 at idle. anywhere in between it tries to die. So full up is no choke and full down is full choke, I am thinking. Is it normal for it to just die halfway between? If it makes any difference, though I doubt it, it has a Two brothers slip on. Otherwise stock.

You got it, up is no choke, down is full choke. I start my '06 about half choke and it doesn't die, but I guess every bike's different. They do have a rep for being cold blooded, though.

1100 sounds a little low for cold idle, you might try adjusting it. (It's very easy, do a search here). I doubt there's anything really wrong with your bike, they're pretty solid.

Welcome, you'll get the hang of it.

My choke lever seems like an on/off switch. All the way down is "ON" and anything else is "OFF" .

I'm thinking I might need to lube that cable. My choke acts like an on/off switch - the engine is either idling too low or flooded and dead, but after I jack with it the lever, it's like it "catches" and sends the bike into a high idle like it's supposed to. Basically, I only get the engine to start and stay running in one try about half the time if I diddle with the choke. But I still love my carbs... EFI is for cars!

Welcome, Ben. Your idle should be about 1400; just look for the pretty yellow star up under there and jab it with a long tool. Good luck.

If it's any value to ya, Lito, my choke has never acted any differently from the showroom floor.

My choke lever doesn't start making a difference until it's almost completely in the down (towards me) position. There might be a slight mid-choke difference, but I don't think so.

Definitely on/off. I always hit the choke when i start 'er up, then 10-15 seconds later i shut it off completely and it's never died on me. If you don't let the bike warm up and just take off with the choke off, it will shudder quite a bit. Mines an '04 though, not sure of the difference between fuel injected/non.

On a side note - It seems like I have to use the choke regardless of the temperature outside. This summer it would be 90 and she still needed choke for 10 sec. or so. I've been driving it lately and its been about 45 degrees out and it still starts right up on choke and 10-15 seconds later i kill the choke and she like a kitten. Just a thought.

Thanks for the welcomes, here is a little update. I adjusted the idle(by sight with the bike's tach, so not exact), and now the bike runs better, still starts without choke. It's about 80 Deg right now. Now, with full choke, the RPMS go up to about 2800, it will still run no matter where I put the choke lever, and idle without choke is just under 1500.
