Alright, after a long search I finally found an '06 599 for sale very close to me.

http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/868552963.html

Under 200 miles on it, and from the talk I had with the owner it sounds legit. My main question for everyone is what sorts of things should I look for? Obviously if there is any damage, but what other questions should I have for the owner? I can't even tell say how excited I am. I know that to some the price seems high, but from my experience in Colorado, it is a very good price. I can't wait to join the club!

Good luck Patty!! 8) Other than looking for obvious damage, I'd be curious
why the seller is selling with under 200 miles on it? Economy, got spooked
on it, too much bike, too little bike, etc. Sounds good though!!

From the sounds of it, it was too much bike. The owner's spouse is very into riding and tried to get her into it, but it sounds like she didn't feel comfortable on the bike. It sounds like it hasn't been dropped or had any mechanical difficulties, but I guess that will be seen. Thanks for the reply though!

Check tire wear and if they are stock tires. If the bike is legit and it probably is snap it up - offer $4,500 and if he doesn't budge pay $5K for it. With 200 miles on it you are getting a great used bike and a great bike.

Agreed but even at 5k that's agreat deal, IMO. Pounce.

Thanks for the advice everyone. The other two 599's that I have gone to look at were both from dealers, and the dealers were asking 6,500 and 6,000 for bikes with around 1,300 miles on them. Crazy enough, the one for $6500 had been dropped on both sides.

The price is very good for the area, so having secured the loan I am ready to pounce like a tiger if it checks out...

Looks like a good deal! Remember you only have another month of riding before the snow hits!!! I use to live in WY, so I know! Don't forget to follow the proper break in procedure for the first 600 miles.
Off topic, who makes the gel seat?

I'm not sure who made the seat; I will be going to look at it tomorrow. I'm not a big fan of overly-cushy seats though, so hopefully they still have the stock saddle with it.

The winter is fast approaching, as I have already seen some snow falling at the higher elevations. The nice thing is I will be on the western slope of colorado, and it's not nearly as snowy and cold over there. Plus this way I will be set to ride as soon as spring rolls around!!

Hopefully it will be a great deal on a great bike tomorrow and I will finally be able to post some pictures of my own bike!!

Sweet! Not too far away from me.

Hope it works out for you.

I saw that you were up the road from me. I'm in Ft. Collins for my last two weeks, then off to Grand Junction to work. There is another member of this forum from Ft. Collins, and one from Grand Junction so I am hoping that maybe we could challenge the other riding groups with a Wyoming/Colorado group! Even the L.A. group couldn't touch us....

Good news! I went and looked at the bike and it was very impressive. There was about 300 miles on it, but the previous owner was very knowledgeable about bikes and after an inspection and test ride, I am now officially a 599 owner. I am picking up the bike on Monday, but even though it is stock I may have to post some pictures... Thanks for the help everyone!!

Or at least what's left of the 600 miles. I'd ask them how fast it's been ridden and especially if it's ever been red-lined.
I might ask them, "What does this thing sound like when revved ALL the way up, like at the red line?"
If they know, I'd make them knock off about a hundred bucks.
Look at the muffler and say, "Man, I bet this thing lets out an AWESOME backfire when you start it up!"
If they concur, knock off another fifty.
And check to make sure the radiator has a CoPar sticker on the bottom of it.

Yeah that last one is especially important.

Congrats Patrick, and welcome to the club.

Thanks everyone! Looking it over, it ran perfectly and the previous owner had treated the bike very well.

The only thing I wasn't overly fond of was that the owner was a lady who decided to have the stock seat turned into a gel seat. The only thing I don't like about it is that the seat height is now about 1/2" to 3/4" lower than stock. I'm sure it would be a cheap fix though to have the seat slightly raised back to around stock height.

I'd keep the gel seat and buy a new stock seat. I wish I had options sometimes.

+1 I'm planning on buying an extra seat to have it "Sergeant-ed" for those times I want to a full day's worth of riding.

And congrats on what sounds like an amazing deal.

Thank you all again. I just picked the bike up today and it is amazing. I put on a few miles today and had a smile on my face the entire time.

One thing I loved about the ride was getting waved to or a nod from both cruisers and sports bikes. I will get some pictures up tomorrow. I can't believe it finally happened!!
