View Full Version : Forum breaking
The forum is breaking down again. Looks like it's time to switch to vBulletin (a better forum software) that I purchased with your support the last time this was going on.
Just so you know... the vBulletin forum looks like crap and will continue to do so until I manage to find the time to sit down and design all the graphical elements it needs. One day, it will look similar to this one, I promise.
Not sure exactly when the new forum will replace this one. I'm relying on a friend with vBulletin experience to do the switch on my behalf. I'll see what I can do to make it happen this week. Trust me, though, you'll know when it happens.
:D
Thank you for your support! You guys make this forum what it is!
pdibsie 11-02-2008, 09:14 PM I really appreciate this forum, as it led me to the great machine sitting in my garage. Thank you for the work you do, as it has brought together a great group of people!
InvaderZimm 11-02-2008, 09:17 PM You're awesome Alex!
JWAJack 11-02-2008, 10:10 PM Alex --
anything we can do to help this along?
Thanks for all the hard work; I know I couldn't do it.
Jack
djamalt 11-03-2008, 12:08 AM Ditto
SLC599er 11-03-2008, 07:57 AM You don't realize what you have until it goes away! Thanks to Alex for keeping this site going, it is a wonderful resource. But I don't suppose the vBulletin update comes with a picture of an '06 instead of an '04? :D
At least it can happen in the off-season.
Super Sneaky Steve 11-03-2008, 08:18 AM I didn't notice anything was wrong with the site.
Thanks for all the work you do Alex!
mitsurugi 11-03-2008, 10:23 AM Yes, thank you very much Alex. This site has been very helpful to many people here 8)
I didn't notice anything was wrong with the site.
That's because you didn't happen to visit it when instead of the usual homepage you get an ugly technical message saying that one of the database tables is corrupted. Tino (who's graciously hosting this forum) fixed it the first 2 times it happened. I fixed it when it happened again last. It seems to break down every couple of days now. :?
Time for a switch. Which reminds me, I need to go email about making the switch.
Oh, and you're all most welcome. It has been a pleasure to run this forum and to see it grow the way it did!
Skier 11-03-2008, 06:38 PM What's the reason for switching BB software rather than upgrading to phpBB3?
Slide 11-04-2008, 08:03 AM Alex – Thanks for running this site. It is an excellent community and it's really appreciated.
What's the reason for switching BB software rather than upgrading to phpBB3?
I already bought the vBulletin forum software. It's not cheap, and from what I can tell, a better application. I might be wrong, but what's done is done, you know.
The switch might happen as early as tomorrow.
robkb 11-04-2008, 08:10 PM I remember one time, people chipped in money to help with the cost of something that helped to keep this forum running strong. Sound familiar?
Where should donations be sent to, Alex?

Those donations were used to purchase vBulletin, which will replace this forum as soon as today. Depends on availability. He's the man who'll do the conversion.
You guys have given this forum more than enough - spend your money on yourselves and your babies (whether human or mechanical)
Thank you!
SysAdmin 11-05-2008, 10:18 PM Hi.. your friendly phpBB to vBulletin migration host here! I'm a member and 599 owner but haven't really posted on here before (though I have PM'd with a few local owners). I just offered to help Alex with the software switch since I have experience with it.
Anyway, I believe I have the forum transferred over to vBulletin successfully.
The only known issue at this time is that avatars did not transfer correctly. After messing around with it for about an hour I decided it would be better to just get the forum back online and there are a couple ways we can address the avatar thing. All the image files are still there, it's just a matter of getting them to display in vBulletin.
Please report any problems you have with the system here http://www.honda599.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4753 and they will be addressed as quickly as possible. The old phpBB forum is all still there intact if we need to go back for any reason.
Awesomeness, thanks! Now I need to find some time to get the branding elements in their place so this forum doesn't look so ... bland and unfamiliar.
SysAdmin 11-05-2008, 10:40 PM OK I think avatars are fixed now.
OK I think avatars are fixed now.
That was quick! Thanks!
yeroC 11-11-2008, 09:19 AM Thanks alot guys!! I'm so glad my favorite forum is back up. I did notice though
that i must have lost some past posts along the way because i had broken a thou
on the other board and now i only have 800 something. No biggie, just an observation.
Thanks again!!!
mda540i 11-14-2008, 10:31 AM Was just able to log back on this morning, I was have withdraws, it has made for a long week at work!!
Thanks guys!!!
hondagirl 11-14-2008, 10:51 AM Thank you Alex! I was mortified when I couldn't get in here for emotional support draining my carbs for the winter :D
599001 11-15-2008, 05:15 AM Thanks, guys...vbulletin is a decent system, the other three forums (2 Mustang, and a Yamaha Banshee forum) that I visit all use it.
599'R 11-15-2008, 09:07 AM Thank You Alex, I was definately "Jonesing" !
You're welcome guys! Since I had a shortcut, the forum never stopped working for me, but when I typed in www.honda599.com into my browser I realized that the redirect file was redirecting to itself - hence the neverending loop some of you might have seen. I fixed it in a hurry!
Now everyone should be able to see this forum! :friday :grouphug
vthoky 11-18-2008, 07:11 PM Okay, so I'm new to the new-and-improved Honda599.com.
I'm not seeing a way to italicize or bold some text, or to include a hyperlink.
Are those options hiding, or am I just not seeing them?

Check it out…
Click the “User CP” tab on the far left hand side of the menu bar. Once that opens scroll down to “Settings & Options” and select “Edit Options.” When the page resolves, scroll all the way down to the “Miscellaneous Options” section and select “Enhanced Interface – Full WYSIWYG Editing” from the pull down menu. Hit “Save Changes” and you’re all set. Then when you reply to a post, actually hit the “Post Reply” button instead of using the “Quick Reply” field located at the bottom of the page, and you’ll see all of your editing options and smileys and all.
What happened to all the 599 reviews? Is there a plan to repopulate automatically, or do we all need to search down all the articles and repost?
At the bottom of every page there's an area called "Display Options". You can set it to show threads as far back as you like.
I tried to figure out how to set that as a default, but am yet to succeed.

Cool beans. I was wondering, too, why I wasn't receiving notification of posts to subscribed threads. I went into my user profile, and reset all my options. I didn't realize I needed to do that in moving to the new board!

Each user can set how far back they view threads by using user cp/settings & options/edit options.

Sorry, that was probably my fault. I was trying to code the html by hand since I couldn't get FTP to work on this server and I guess I made a mistake on the redirect URL.
Adamizme 12-12-2008, 07:21 AM The new forum software works great with my Windows Mobile browser! I was never able to post from my phone with the old setup. Thanks Alex!
You might have noticed that I started playing around with the forum's style. The whole blue thing just isn't working for me. Hope you don't hate the new (and still evolving) look.
Mitch 12-30-2008, 08:38 PM hahha, the almighty AleX just does whatever he wants.
I logged in just now, and I thought my new laptop's screen was bugging out. I got super pissed for a few seconds.
I don't have staging server to play with, so you boys and girls have to suffer the consequences. The forum is starting to look better now. I think I will leave it as you see it right now for a while and see if I get any complaints.
yeroC 12-30-2008, 10:09 PM I'm cool with it. Thanks AleX.
370steve 12-31-2008, 05:32 AM looking gooooooooooood to me mate
sodaking663rd 12-31-2008, 06:42 AM i think it looks better...the blue wasn't working with that purdy yellow 599 in the masthead.
Mitch 12-31-2008, 10:02 AM now that the color scheme has been changed, I've noticed that all the unread threads are bold, but some are blue and others are gray. what's the difference?
Black = unread, gray = visited/read. Where are the blue ones?! I would need to fix those.
Mitch 01-01-2009, 11:20 AM It's kinda weird. If I go into my "New Posts" tab, It shows a listing of everything I haven't read. Things that are bold (but can be black or gray now) are unread, but unbolded things that are gray have been read.

Threw me at first too, but here's the deal. The BOLD GREY topics are threads you have read recently (not sure how far back is considered recently) but that have new posts in them that you haven't read. The BOLD BLACK are treads that you have not opened at all. At least, that's what it seems like to me.
What he said. ^
a4naught 01-09-2009, 09:31 PM Yea, the yellow's back! Had me for a sec...doh! How did I end up on the "old" sight?:thinking
I like it. I liked the blue, but I like the yellow better. And I do like the "new posts" thing. Nice. I don't remember if it was there before, but I also like the little icons that show what threads you are subscribed to.
I LOVE the fact that I get a new thread comment to my iPhone and can read the latest, then go to the included thread right from the link. Excellent. I know that's probably not new, but I do love it.:thumbsup

:woohoo I did good!
I use the "Quick links" tab and select "Today's posts". I visit the forum several times a day and it works great for me.
