View Full Version : Fall down, go boom

So I'm getting ready to start beginning to prepare to think about having some closure on this one. :?

Week before last, I'm on my way to work taking a favorite back road. Lots of small gravel everywhere, the kind they use for snow/ice on the roads. Coming down one longer hill, I'm looking to the left hand curve ahead and all looks pretty clear. I do my braking, down shift, lean in to the turn, and wonder why in the hell I'm looking at the sky. :thinking

Turns out there was some gravel alongside some tar patches that was wet, and so the same color. I never saw it. But lost the front when I hit it.

The slide puts me about 40 feet on and 4 feet down in a corn field, just below the bike. It has taken out a street sign (damned flimsy!) and the headlight and instrument cluster are all for shit. Dents and chips in the tank. It's pretty ugly, but doesn't look too bad after I scrape some mud off.

A few days later, the insurance adjuster comes to my house where I took the bike. Late last week, he calls to give me the company estimate on repairs, which comes to over $4,300.

In Maryland, if your repair cost is 75% or more of the retail value, it's a total by law. On Monday, the math is done. My 599 is a total loss. So I'll be buying a new bike. Can't afford to keep the 599 because of what I still owe on it.

Lesson re-learned: wear your gear!! I've only got a few bumps and bruises to show for it. Even had a track day on Sunday. Wear your gear!!!!!

Anyway, I'll be posting up some parts for sale. Mostly stock bits, some accessories that weren't on when I went down. Get 'em while they last.

Sucks, J. :|

You thinking of another Hornet, or something like a SV or Triumph? Or (gasp)... a clothed bike?

Edit: I guess if you are selling all your racks and bits, you have ruled out another 599. Double sad.

Sorry to hear, I'm glad you're alright. If it could happen to you, it could happen to any of us!

Glad you made it thru relatively unscathed! Gear is the way to go. What do you think you'll be riding next??

Sucks ass, but glad you're alright.

We mourn the loss of another 599.

Yep, gear is good. Bought a leather Joe Rocket to replace my textile Olympia. Good stuff, the Olympia, I can highly recommend it. Did I mention you should always wear your gear?

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. I'm mostly bummed because I can't afford to keep the bike, even just for track use. It's such a fine ride! In the meantime, I'm turning my Nighthawk 250 into a cafe and it will have 599 as a "race" number.

Looking at new, I'm leaning towards Triumph. Have had a few chances to hear the 675 engine, and boy does that sound cool!!! Seems I might beat Barx to the punch. It's kinda between the Street Triple R and the Daytona 675, IMHO the best looking clothed bike going. The Duc 848 makes me drool, too, but that's my lottery bike...

Haven't ruled out another Hornet at all. There are just really slim pickings right now. Who among you all will give yours up?

I'm actually selling the accessories because I've realized I'm not likely to do many long tours. Keeping the saddle bags and tank bag, and planning on a tail bag, though. There will be road trips, just more like long weekends. The stock bits, however, are just taking up space now, and I'd like them to find a good home.

Future mods to any bike will be primarily in the performance arena. Suspension, exhaust, brakes. Then ergos.

What was the buy back on the 599? It seems like a buy back could be cheaper, ask JBarx.

I am kicking myself when I think I could have bought back my first 599 for $700 dollars. I should have but there were nagging voices that said don't do it.

Buy-back for me was $1,445. Not bad, if I didn't still have a note. Then I would have set it up for track use. But it would have left me with just a few hundred, not enough to fix it even if I did the work. Parts is 'spensive!!!

Oh, TRIPLE SUCKO, man! And you just got the baggage thing all good! Sorry to hear, but really glad that you are alright. *Phew!*

And you said you had all your gear on? Definitely worth repeating.
Sounds also like it was so fast you didn't even have time for the "oh SH**!" moment. I guess there's that. Too bad about the economics.

But, hey, your fit to talk about it. In the end, another learning experience that didn't hurt you...just the wallet. Bad enough, but not the worst.

Sure sorry to loose ya as a threader. Good luck with the other choices you have to made. I must've been snoozin' when you started the oem part out...ah, well. Wasn't meant to be. Good luck!

You boner.

You might easily beat me to the punch because I've decided I am NOT buying a brand new Triple, and used ones don't exist. Couple that with my re-acquisition of the mod virus, and well... I guess I'm sticking with this one for a while.

Sorry about your get-off. Good to hear you're in good shape, if not the bike. At least you have other bikes around! I was definitely not so lucky.

I'm apparently harder to kill than I would have thought, A4. Still got everything except the side and top racks, if you're looking. Thread is here (http://honda599.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5490).

Barx, I hear you. I was having spring modding dreams, too. Pipe, undertail, new mirrors, maybe a jet kit. Had no plans at all to buy new. Oh well.

Anyway, I get to go shopping this weekend. There are lots worse things. And did I mention, always wear your gear?
