View Full Version : Some A-hole knocked my bike over
LeatherWings 09-15-2009, 05:28 PM I was parked in the street near my friend's place. I had made sure to give the car enough space to get out of the spot. But of course, cagers in LA are the biggest morons in existence, whom I have despised, even before this incident. When I go to leave, i see my bike laying on the ground. The piece of shit who did this was long gone. It must have been laying there for 1-2 hours. When I got it back up vertical and started it up, there was thick smoke coming from the exhaust pipes. The left side of the tail plastics has large cracks in it, the muffler is bent, headlight cowl scratched up, speedo backlight not working, and there's a dent in the fuel tank (can't tell without feeling, cuz of the tank cover). I think there would have been significantly less damage had the bike not fallen directly onto the curb.
I was, and am, sooo pissed.
My friend was saying the smoke coming from the exhaust is from oil leaking into the cylinder when the bike was on its side for so long, and someone else told me i should change the oil cuz it's probably nasty from being mixed with fuel. This also pisses me off becuase i just changed my oil two weeks ago.
the red paint on the muffler shield is from the red curb it fell onto:

carlitos_92 09-15-2009, 05:44 PM Sucks.
You think they pushed it maliciously, or just clipped it when they pulled out because they weren't looking?
Were you parked in a place where there could be witnesses? Hunting this POS down for blood could be kinda fun.
yeroC 09-15-2009, 05:47 PM :rant:rant:wtf:cry: Dang sorry dude!! Maybe it was those gremlin people from the insurance commercial..sorry, i kid but this really sucks because there is no recourse. No ass to kick, no one's head to chew off..just friggin' sucks. When you find the dingleberry who did it, let us know so the Hornet gang can mount up!!
SLC599er 09-15-2009, 05:50 PM I can only imagine how much that must suck. Good luck in getting things back in order--hopefully at the expense of the person who did it!
JHenley17 09-15-2009, 07:09 PM I almost know what that's like, except the girl that hit mine didn't run. It really sucks. Did you make a claim? That gauge cluster could be pretty expensive.
Awww, man. That sucks. I have really nothing comforting to say, other than, KARMA'S A BITCH! Hope you feel better soon, and get the bike straightened out.
Billy from Philly 09-15-2009, 09:05 PM Thats why I park on the sidewalk.
JohnG 09-15-2009, 09:38 PM sorry!!!

Yeah, it makes it so much worse cuz there's absolutely nothing I can do. It happened some time between 11PM and 1:00AM so there were basically no witnesses. Like I was saying, I was mindful and gave the car plenty of room, but that dickhead (or bitchface) plowed right into my bike anyways. Of course hindsight is always 20/20, but it's like from now on, I might snap a camera photo of the licence plate of any parked cage that might back into my bike.

yeah, i think i remember that thread. that's cool the person didn't try to just take off.
I only have liability insurance for my bike. I'm hoping it's just a broken bulb in the speedo, so hopefully it will be an easy fix. Still, it's annoying that I even have to do any of this.
man, look how awesome that Asphalt finish on the tail looked, and now it's been brutally marred... :-(

motorico 09-16-2009, 11:51 AM That sucks. Not much else I can add.
skrogg 09-16-2009, 02:26 PM Yeah , that blows.. it happened to me when my bike was a few weeks old.
My buddy's 7yr old pushed it off the kickstand and it fell in their yard.
I would super nova if I came out and found my bike just layn in the street.
DH919 09-17-2009, 07:51 PM I feel your pain... my baby was hurt recently because of some dumbass in a cage...
It sucks!
I have the bike hit, not downed, by a moron that didn't see the bike parked behind his SUV when he walked to the car and, of course, the inside mirror on these things are useless.
If they cannot see a 400lb bike, what if there was someone walking behind them?
That really blows, maybe you need a rat bike for city riding when you are parking it and not riding for fun. People can be so fracked up...

That's the thing, I typically use my SV for putting around town. I mean, of course I care about my SV and wouldn't want anything to happen to it, but It hurts alot more to see my 919 in agony. :-(
I took the tank cover off to see how bad the dents were underneath. Damnit!!! I had to spend $500 for a new replacement fuel tank when I first got the bike over two years ago, and now there are big friggin' dents in it. I want to find the person who did this and put a dent in his face!

Don't they make plastic slider pieces, or something like that, in the UK for the Hornet fuel tank? I thought I remembered seeing one of those, it's like a molded piece that goes right where the damage is on the tank.

- who would make these tank pieces? i need em!!
motorico 09-19-2009, 12:55 PM Can the tail section be plastic welded from the inside? Granted repairing the plastic and paint may cost as much or more than a new tail section.

I don't know, but if they do, it sounds like a great investment!
Asphalt_in_SF 09-28-2009, 02:08 PM Sorry man. Can't believe the amount of damage from a tip over. Since it dropped left the kick-stand side might have lifted/twisted the bike adding force to the fall. Having lived in LA for 5 years I agree there are is no place with more selfish and distracted drivers. The asphalt looks good roughed up. It gives the bike character, women like character. And money.
Ronsonol lighter fluid will clean up that muffler with little effort.
Here's a link on plastic welding. If you don't need it to be perfect you'll be done in 30 min. I fixed some plastic recently using JB kwik weld and it worked great. Use a little super glue and clear packing tape to hold the pieces together and then slap a bunch of JB weld over the cracks on the inside. Done. You'll be surprised at the quality and how easy it was. I wouldn't sand the paint like the article suggests.
Oil change sounds like a good idea. Depending if you had your fuel-cock positioned at on or off you might just be burning up residual gasoline and crud that it dissolved in the exhaust system. Check with your mechanic but I think black smoke is crud, white/blue smoke is oil related.
Incidentally California bikes have an additional fuel cutoff solenoid valve for the cat convert. Fortunatly the service manual does not list a tip as a cause of fuel entering the cat converter. But get this.
The two causes that will damage your cat converter are:
1. Using the kill switch while the engine is running. WTF? When else would you use it? I wondered why the owners manual specifically says to turn the bike off at the key... so you don't turn your cat converter into a gas filled IED. Thanks for the tip. I read MSF recommends using the kill switch every time so one develops muscle memory in case of an incident. Others are against this practice as it will wear out the switch and leave you stranded. Now I don't have to decide.
2. If the ignition cut switch (rev limiter) operates when the engine is over revved. Again, WTF? When else would I need the limiter? This is really going to put a cramp on my Brazilian WOT exhaust test.
And it steals some power... Hmmm, this cat converter business is getting tricky. Do we really need clean air?

cool, thx for the link. i'm definitely gonna try to glue it back together. it's not gonna be pretty, but whatever.
like i said, had the bike fallen onto flat ground, i don't think the damage would have been as much. but the tail fell directly onto a curb and put the bike at an awkward angle.
you know, the previous gen ninja 250 doesn't look half bad when you get rid of the ridiculous 1980's era fairings... tidy up the all the loose cables/wires, clean up the tail section (maybe trim down the stock rear plastics so they look less cheezy), throw a round headlight on it, and bam!

you lived in LA for 5 years? then you oughta know that women here are more into the latter...
but to be fair, so are the men.

Agreed. Still, LA has hands down the worlds largest gathering of drop dead gorgeous women and the time I spent there was priceless. Live it up bro.

Yes beauty born or bought. Not that I really make a distinction.
dory_1982 01-21-2010, 10:25 PM Bugger! Not as bad, some cager tapped my hornet out the front of our building a couple months ago... it hit a small tree before getting to the ground. It was stood back up so no oil in the air filter etc etc but the tank was crushed like a tin can (where it hit the tree) and thanks to the tree the only other damage was the brake pedal bent in and indicator broken off. ducktail scratched up too, but not broken. $700 repair all up though!
JD
LeatherWings 01-22-2010, 12:06 PM that sucks, JD. so did you get out there before the person could take off? is he/she gonna pay for the damages?
dory_1982 01-24-2010, 11:27 PM Nah, I only noticed it coz the bike wasn't straight - the way i parked it. I figured a 2 day window. The local businesses helped by sifting through some store front footage but no luck.
Since I couldn't find the person that did it i just paid myself... my excess is $500 so not worth the mark on my premium.
a4naught 03-23-2010, 12:12 AM Crap, Leather. Sorry to hear 'bout that. Yes, we seem to have the motor shitheels here in spades. Hope you can JB it back together without too much trauma. Blow. Dead baby bears.

it's been about six months now since it happened. holy crap, half a year has gone by already from then? anyways, bike runs fine. but i still have a big crack in the tail section and a dent in the exhaust cover and fuel tank. oh well, whatever. just means i'm a lil less OCD about my bike's appearance these days.
on an unrelated-to-the-knock-over-incident note, my front brakes are, and have been, in need of rebuilding of some kind. the front brakes tend to drag at times, or have a tremendously inconsistent feel to them. i don't think it's air in the system, cuz i've bled it multiple times. i think my master cylinder needs to be rebuilt. but i figure if i'm gonna do that, i might as well put new SS brake lines on it, as well as rebuild the calipers with new seals and such. also, my forks seem to be in need of an oil and seal change. damnit, i have no money for all this crap. even if i were to do the servicing myself, parts are still gonna cost alot.
mazdamike25 04-20-2010, 10:12 AM get a ruckus and soup it up for everyday riding.

LeatherWings 04-21-2010, 12:29 AM damnit! now my battery is dead and i'll need to get a new one. i think i'm gonna look into those $50 motorcycle batteries they got at AutoZone. you'd think they'd have one that works for the 919...

i rode some guy's ruckus around (that sounds kinda weird) the pits this one time. i don't know how much it was souped up, but it was pretty gutless. i don't think i'd feel safe riding that thing around a busy metropolitan city like LA with oblivious mofos driving around in their damn H2's while talking on their cell phone.
mazdamike25 04-21-2010, 07:00 PM get the big ruckus....they quit making it in 2006 like the 599.....it was a 250 and bad ass.
75 is all it could really do though.

i'm not against scooters or anything, but to me tho, it's like at that point i might as well just get a 250 motorcycle. i know you're all anti-V-twins and all, but this little VTR250 kicks ass! damn you Honda for another bike we can't have!!!

I'm sorry, dude, but every time I've seen this thread lately, I've just thought "That's funny, an A-hole picked your bike back up, too."
Just kidding. But a Big 250cc Ruckus with a supercharger or nitrous, and painted with truck-bed liner might be pretty fun. I mean, put spikes on it, a ramming bar, and really make it an urban assault vehicle...
