View Full Version : Just performed a Bafflectomy on my 919 - with video! LeatherWings 06-07-2010, 12:59 AM heheh... 0eyU74ZZhLE DH919 06-07-2010, 04:36 PM are you pleased? LeatherWings 06-07-2010, 06:51 PM oh yeah! i love how i can actually hear it now while riding, and really helps with engine awareness when i have earplugs in. my 919 has now been given a much needed attitude adjustment in the sound department to go along with its tough, no-holds-barred looks. one of the best mods out there, and i only wish i woulda done it sooner DH919 06-09-2010, 09:42 AM it was the first mod I did to mine. I absolutly love it! gave me the sound I wanted, and didn't cost me a small fortune. I bought an extra set of pipes from ebay... So, I still have the stockers. :-) Glad you like it! lets the 919 really roar! LeatherWings 06-09-2010, 06:57 PM lets the 919 really roar! it reminds me of the sound that Colussus makes in the old X-Men arcade game. jump to 3:25 if you have no clue what i'm talking about, haha dciHRKr6epM DH919 06-09-2010, 07:14 PM I finally watched your video, maybe it's just the camera, but I think mine sounds a little deeper than that... Or, maybe it's that evap thing you were talking about LeatherWings 06-09-2010, 07:43 PM I finally watched your video, maybe it's just the camera, but I think mine sounds a little deeper than that... well yeah, the tiny microphone on the camera probably is not the best thing to pick up low frequencies. also, the camera picked up alot of ambient noise in the parking garage i was in. DH919 06-09-2010, 08:37 PM That's cool, I'll see if I can't get a video of what mine sounds like posted... yeroC 06-09-2010, 08:46 PM Nice L-Dub..you demon you.:thumbsup Looked like fun too.. carlitos_92 06-09-2010, 08:59 PM oh yeah! i love how i can actually hear it now while riding, and really helps with engine awareness when i have earplugs in. That has turned out to be the biggest benefit for my gut job as well. It sounds good. Did you take any pics during the process that might help future 919 debafflers? I've seen Diehard's, but still wasn't quite sure what the job entailed on those round cans. LeatherWings 06-09-2010, 09:08 PM It sounds good. Did you take any pics during the process that might help future 919 debafflers? I've seen Diehard's, but still wasn't quite sure what the job entailed on those round cans. no, i figured there were plenty of other resources around for 919er's. one of the main sites with the how-to seems to be down, www.project919.com (http://www.project919.com), but this one is still up: http://members.multimania.co.uk/sweepyuk/exhaust%20debaffle.htm "standard before drilling" http://members.multimania.co.uk/sweepyuk/hpbimg/Standard%20outlet%20of%20can%201.jpg outer baffle and center pipe removed http://members.multimania.co.uk/sweepyuk/hpbimg/outlets%20removed%20thumb.jpg this guy sawed off the end so he could remove everything from the inside (this is what mine looks like on the inside) http://members.multimania.co.uk/sweepyuk/hpbimg/inside%20end%20can%20after%20outlet%20piece%20remo ved.jpg the small pipe you see sticking out in the 1st pic was welded to that hole on the right you see in the last pic. I basically had to use an 8" screwdriver as a chisel and puncture the plate to get the damn pipe out, so mine actually looks alot more torn up on the inside. before modification, the exhaust had to travel and snake through all three of the mini-pipes before it exited the can. now it exits straight through one of the smaller pipes (the bottom left one in the last pic). DH919 06-09-2010, 09:26 PM X6pWSWveUn0 Short clip from the Dragon earlier this year... LeatherWings 06-09-2010, 09:38 PM Short clip from the Dragon earlier this year... that looks like a pretty fun corner. yeah, sounds like your camera picked up alot more low-end, whereas mine seems to be more treble-y DH919 06-09-2010, 09:40 PM So they do sounds alike then I take it? LeatherWings 06-09-2010, 09:44 PM So they do sounds alike then I take it? yeah, your vid is actually pretty close to how it sounds from inside my helmet DH919 06-09-2010, 09:46 PM that's cool, and yes, that is a very fun corner... :) LeatherWings 08-03-2010, 12:12 AM just wanted to offer up some more thoughts on the bafflectomy after having ridden it more extensively now... It's friggin awesome! i don't know why, but i like that slight, very quick gurgling sound the exhaust initially makes when you close the throttle at high speeds and high rpms... i guess it just reminds me of the sound the AMA Superbikes made when I saw 'em race at Laguna Sega. and as a riding buddy noted, the end of the can is pretty gnarly looking now. instead of that cheesy looking, baffled mini-pipe sticking out of the end, there's a big opening now reminiscent of a canon... or afterburners http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1274/1048722623_840c071cf1.jpg JBarx 08-03-2010, 07:20 AM It's friggin awesome! i don't know why, but i like that slight, very quick gurgling sound the exhaust initially makes when you close the throttle at high speeds and high rpms... i guess it just reminds me of the sound the AMA Superbikes made when I saw 'em race at Laguna Sega. Chaz and I have officially coined that "the burble". And yes, it rules. carlitos_92 08-03-2010, 07:22 AM Chaz and I have officially coined that "the burble". And yes, it rules. The second-gear burble is the only good thing about stop-and go traffic. ;) Mobotix 08-06-2010, 10:11 AM The project 919 how-to page is down. What size hole saw bits did you use to cut the baffle out? LeatherWings 08-06-2010, 10:18 AM I used a 1.25" hole saw to first cut directly around the inner pipe, then a 2" hole saw for the baffle. but a 1.125" and 2.25" would be more ideal, since they would move around a little less in inside the opening of the can while you drill Mobotix 08-06-2010, 11:28 AM Thanks! This will be my first mod once I acquire a 919. DH919 08-06-2010, 12:41 PM I love the bafflectomy. I may put the stock pipes back on before my cross country ride, just to avoid riding through a small town, and having to deal with the local po-po Which reminds me... Mobotix 08-19-2010, 06:46 PM Worked like a charm. I love cheap and easy mods! LeatherWings 08-19-2010, 06:48 PM Worked like a charm. I love cheap and easy mods! sweeeet. you should make a vid and post it! :) DH919 08-20-2010, 01:21 PM Worked like a charm. I love cheap and easy mods! Have you done the flapper mod? it's really easy and cheap. Some people swear it work, I didn't notice a difference, so I'm curious as to your success... djamalt 08-24-2010, 12:58 AM I completely forgot that I had this. It's from some cat up on Angeles Crest who had just done the ol ectomy on his 919... YCw-rlLygWU DH919 08-25-2010, 11:50 AM I completely forgot that I had this. It's from some cat up on Angeles Crest who had just done the ol ectomy on his 919... YCw-rlLygWU Sounds sweet doesn't it??? Nakedbike38 03-17-2011, 09:51 PM ok I have a 599 and was wondering if performance wise do you feel anything was lost in doing this? And i'm not to familar with the 919 but would you have to rejet the carbs just by doing this? LeatherWings 03-18-2011, 10:00 AM i just got an HD camcorder and a Zoom H1 audio recording device. I'll make a new-and-improved vid sometime in the near future... ok I have a 599 and was wondering if performance wise do you feel anything was lost in doing this? And i'm not to familar with the 919 but would you have to rejet the carbs just by doing this? there was no loss in performance. I'm not sure about the carb'd 599, but the fuel injection of the 919 seems to be unaffected by the bafflectomy. I read somewhere that the 919 comes too rich from the factory as it is. i don't remember if you can bafflectomize the 599 or not, but if you can, i would imagine a complete rejet is probably not necessary. you might just need to adjust your fuel/air mixture. | |
