Default Who really wears gear in hot weather?

So on my ride just around town today I was wearing my mesh jacket, mesh riding pants, boots, and helmet of course. I seem to be the only one wearing gear in this hot weather and get a lot of strange looks. The squids were wear T-shirts that flap in the wind up to the back of their necks. The cruisers wear wifebeaters, shorts and sneakers.

So I'm curious, do all of you wear all your gear all the time or if you're just buzzing around town do you slack for comforts sake? Maybe I could loosen up on the gear a bit.

I used to wear helmet, gloves, and jacket even for quick half-mile runs to Walgreen's. The guys at work will probably look at me funny if I decide on a bike again.

A guy on a local forum yesterday posted about some 18-year-old kid practicing around the neighborhood. He walked out and offered him a jacket and advice, both were refused. Crazy. I guess I'm the way I am because of my own experiences with and without gear though.

I had a girl at the gas station ask if my mesh jacket was hot, I said not as hot as layn on the street in a tshirt.

For just buzzing around town ,I just wear gloves and helmet. I will break out the jacket and pants if I'm going riding or planning on doing something stupid.

I used to ride around in a helmet and gloves sometimes, but now, I ride with my helmet, gloves, jacket and boots everywhere. Jacket, boots and gloves are leather too, so it's pretty bad sometimes, but you know what they say, "Rather lose a pound of sweat or a pound of flesh/blood."

Yup. Helmet, gloves, boots, and jacket. I've only just eased up on pants because it's getting too hot and I'm getting too old and fat to wear them when it's really hot out.

Always gear for me,.. Jacket, Helmet, Gloves and boots.

However, if I was to go out without gear.. I would keep the boots, gloves and jacket.

I've never understood the point of wearing a helmet to protect the thing that makes all your bad decisions, but yet don't protect the equipment/limbs that make you money or allow you to do all these fun things in life.

What's the point of protecting your head when your body no longer functions because of some accident?

I don't know.. Maybe I just have a different outlook on life.
But I really just don't understand the goof ball weaving in and out of traffic in a 'wife beater', shorts and running shoes as if he has somewhere to be that is more important than everyone elses life but yet still throws a helmet and gloves on?

Something like 47% of motorcycle crashes result in lower extremity injuries(leg, knee, hip, pelvis, ankle, foot) think about that the next time yer riding with gloves, helmet and a jacket....

For such an individualistic thing as riding a motorbike, it always surprises me how much of the sheep can be brought out in people. A gang that hangs around one of my bike stops all have the 'Lone Wolf' patch. It's given me endless laughs seeing them huddle to decide what they are going to do next.

Unless the law says otherwise, I think it's up to the individual to decide what to wear when they ride. Are power rangers, diving into a bend at 70 any safer that the t-shirted guys who take the same bend at 30? The general thinking with helmet manufacturers is that over 30 mph, all bets are off.

Primary safety (experience, skill and knowledge) is the important thing. It's why gear is classed as secondary safety.

I have a 3 mile commute that I usually do on my 599. It's been getting over 100F for the past few weeks, but I always wear the full face helmet, vented gloves, mesh jacket with all the armor, and Astars boots. The boots claim to be vented, but that amounts to what looks like a dozen stabs with an ice pick. I admit I don't do the overpants over my denim jeans for these short trips. If I'm going further, I try to remember the ear plugs. In the dirt, I always add the overpants, or wear my kevlar jeans. Not as good as armored pants, but I can wear them at social occasions (like work) without taking them off.

Yeah, but it's my insurance premiums that pay for the squids' hospital bills.

I go ATGATT. If it's that hot that I'm worried about it, my car has a/c.

I was really talking about the difference in risk between an atgatt going too fast because they think they are safe and the t-shirt guy riding slow. I don't think there is much difference. Being squidish is a different matter. I'd agree on that, stoopid always costs.

Always wear it, helmet, boots, jacket, gloves, even on short jaunts to the local liquor store.

I don't think the guys in wife beaters and shorts ride any safer than anyone in gear. Actually, they're usually riding a lot less responsibly than most of the guys who gear up. I also don't think it matters that they're only crashing at 30. I've crashed twice at roughly 30 and either tore myself up or tore my gear up. I'd gear up just the same on a Ruckus 50 as I would on a 1000.
