Default Road Trip Ideas for next year.

Next year a small group of 4 are planning a group road trip. We all live in different parts of the country and don't see each other often. This trip I hope becomes a big deal for us.

Just looking for ideas on cool places to go visit or routes, etc. Maybe a mixed of cheap motels and camping. Probably any where in North America. Small chance it might be dual sports. We are all Americans. Is it hard getting into Mexico or Canada? I hear mixed things about Mexico. Is it safe. Do you guys carry a gun on trips? Over the boarder?

You don't want to take a gun into Canada! That is the number one question they have for us at the border -- are you packing heat?! But Mexico.. don't know the rules.

You need a passport for Canada, other than that the border crossing isn't too big of a deal.

How about making the trip up to Alaska? That would be better for you if you are starting in OR. How self-sufficient and weather-resistant is your group?

And carrying a gun on the bike across state lines is a headache. Some states will be fine with it, some are absolutely not.

Some ideas I can recommend:

- The roads through the mountains surrounding Yellowstone Park - Beartooth Highway, Chief Joseph Highway

- The redwoods of coastal northern California

- The southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina

- The Cherohala Skyway in NC/TN

- The Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming

- Mt. St. Helens, WA

- Crater Lake OR

- Zion National Park in UT - all of that area of the southwest, really

- The northern tip of Nova Scotia

- Rocky Mountain National Park, CO -- Estes Park area

Thanks Sundog. Half the places you said I have been too and agree they are great.

Travelling across the Canadian border is no big deal if you have a passport. But really, don't bring a gun. People get them taken away, can face a fine and in a worse case scenario, they might impound your vehicle. You don't need a gun in Canada anyways. However, if you do make the trip to Canada there are some great roads. I personally recommend going from Vancouver to Lillooet on the Duffy Lake Road. You can continue north from there, or head east to the rockies. It is all pretty stunning with pretty good pavement. The trip through BC to Calgary, is also pretty great.

I drove from Vancouver to Austin TX this summer cutting through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and then back through Wyoming and Montana. It was an amazing trip and I wish I was on my bike for most of it. Although, I don't know if I could have made the journey in the same time.

If you do end up in Washington State, riding up Mount Baker is also one of my favourite rides.
