Default F3 Rear wheel compatibility

Hi all, noob here, just picked up an '04 599 as my first "modern" bike with intentions of it being an all-rounder / commuter / light tourer that will likely see occasional dirt road action and maybe a track day every now and then.

So far I'm very impressed with the bike and can tell we'll get along great, my only qualm though is that the handling feels very heavy and it takes way more handlebar pressure to make it go around corners than what I would prefer. Coming off of a Hawk GT and Moto Guzzi V50, and I'm attributing much of that perceived heaviness to the 599's obnoxiously wide 180/55 rear tire (sacrilege I know)

My question: I'm thinking about swapping rear wheels from a CBR600 F3 (5"vs 5.5) to allow the use of either a 170/60 or 160/60 rear tire and hopefully add some flickability to the bikes handling - does anyone know if the F3 rear wheel is a direct bolt on to the 599 / what other parts would have to be swapped to make it work? Thanks!

What tires are you on, as this could make a difference, especially if the tires are old and have a flat spot in the middle. I have always found the 599 pretty nimble myself. I don't think an f3 wheel would be a direct swap.

Here is a thread on the subject.

As far as i know it wont be a big deal to fit a CBR600F3 rear wheel to the hornet, might just need different wheel spacers making, but might not even need them changing.

How much do you weigh?

How high does the fork tubes stick out past the triple?

Tires are moderate but evenly worn BT016's, I'm 150lbs and the forks stick about 6mm past the tops of the triple clamp now. Probably just a psychological thing after putting most of my miles on bikes with either a 110 or 150 rear haha.

Actually did a little research in the parts diagrams after seeing that other thread and I think it will be the same effort as putting on the 900 wheel - Bearings and center spacers are different part numbers between the bikes, dampers are the same so sprocket carriers will be interchangeable.

Really could use some new tires anyway, so guess I'll go ahead and order my first set in the original size - don't have the extra time for experimentation at the moment so was only going to do a wheel swap if it was a known bolt-on and I could just mount a new tire and go.

Thanks for the replies! Still keeping this idea on the back burner, will update the thread if / when I have time to find an old F3 wheel and try the swap.

What is the stock setting for how much the fork tubes should protrude past the top of the triple clamp?
