Default New Owner in Los Angeles

Hey all, just bought a yellow '04 a couple weeks ago and have been loving it. Spent some time lurking around the forums already, there's a ton of great info on here which I'm looking forward to utilizing. I'll be getting into recommended tires right away, as I just realized that the bike still has the original rear tire on it (13 years old!). Dealer replaced the front tire after it had been traded in but neglected the rear... I think because the tread looks ok on it still, even with almost 14k miles.

Bike's fully stock so I'll be looking to buy some minor upgrades as well - fender eliminator, handlebar mirrors, etc. Maybe a slip-on exhaust one day.

Anyway glad to be here, I know this place isn't so active anymore but hope to chat with some fellow riders when I can.

Couple of pics of her from my ride on Saturday in the Santa Monica mountains. This was just off of Stunt Road: http://imgur.com/a/lkTxC

Welcome to the forum! Your Hornet looks really nice. You sure it's the original rear tire with 14k miles and still has tread? Usually burn through 2 rear for each front. If it's really that old it should be replaced anyway.

Thanks, glad to be here!

I suppose I can't say for sure that it's the original tire, but if I'm reading this DOT code right it's definitely from 2003. And it's a Pilot Road S, which the owner's manual has as a recommended (thus factory?) tire.

Great choice in color! Keep us updated as you fiddle with her, and don't discount the Aprilia mirrors - they work amazingly!

I love the yellow as well. Didn't have much of a choice though, as this was the only 599 for sale (private or dealer) in the LA area! Was really surprised at how uncommon these bikes are.

I'll definitely check out the Aprilias. As long as they sit lower than the stock ones I'm happy. The current ones feel too tall and, well, square.

I'm pretty sure that's the stock tire. I would ditch that thing in an instant. I had a wipeout in 2011 from an original tire. That's been 5 years already! Where is the time going...

Like Slippy just said it's not worth your life. Any doubts, replace it.

Today's ride from work back to home is gonna be the last ride with it on. Out of town over the weekend, getting it replaced ASAP when I get back.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Look for tire manufacturer rebates. I think Bridgestone is doing $50 right now on some models, VFR guys are getting sets for $190.

Yes, that's the stock one.
Perhaps we could swap our tyres, my Hornet tyres were produced in 1998

Just kidding, new tyres are already ordered...

At least I had some tread left on mine

Tire's been ordered, shop's putting it on early next week. Decided to just match my front tire, a Shinko 009 Raven. Good bang for your buck from what I've seen.
